Feather Client: Download, Mods and FPS Boost for Minecraft

Feather Client is a Minecraft: Java Edition client and launcher that comes with over 40 mods preinstalled. You do not need to download Sodium, Lithium, or a PvP HUD separately. They are already in the client, and you toggle them on or off from a built-in mod manager.

The client supports both Fabric and Forge mod loaders. That means you can add your own mods alongside the ones that ship with Feather. If you want a shader pack like Iris or a utility mod like Mod Menu, you drop the JAR into the mod manager and it shows up next to the built-in ones.

Who made it?

Feather was originally developed by an independent team and gained a large player base, especially on Hypixel. In 2023 the project was acquired by InPvP. The original feathermc.com site now redirects to dawn.gg, which is the successor client built by the same team. The old Feather builds still function, and many players still use them because they are stable and familiar.

What versions of Minecraft does it support?

Feather is best known for 1.8.9, which is the version most Hypixel PvP players use. Because it supports both Fabric and Forge, you can also run it on newer versions. The built-in mods are optimized for 1.8.9, but the mod manager works across versions.

Is it safe?

Feather vs. Dawn: what changed?

Dawn is the continuation of Feather after the InPvP acquisition. It keeps the same core features (built-in mods, FPS boost, mod manager) and adds a few things: free server hosting from your own PC with IP protection through their proxy network, built-in voice chat, and cross-server chat. If you want the latest updates and new features, Dawn is the better pick. If you just want the original Feather experience, the builds on this page cover that.

Start with the built-in performance mods

Open the mod manager and make sure the performance mods are enabled. These are the rendering and logic optimization mods that ship with Feather. They are on by default, but if you turned something off and forgot, this is the first thing to check.

Lower your render distance

This is the single biggest FPS lever in Minecraft. Going from 16 chunks to 10 chunks can double your frame rate on weaker hardware. For PvP on Hypixel, 6 to 8 chunks is enough. For survival, 10 to 12 is a good balance.

Turn off smooth lighting and particles

Smooth lighting adds shadow calculations that cost CPU time. Setting it to "Minimum" or "Off" gives a noticeable FPS bump. Reducing particles to "Minimal" helps in areas with lots of particle effects (like farms or combat).

Disable motion blur

Feather has a built-in motion blur mod. It looks nice in screenshots but costs frames. Turn it off in the mod manager if you are chasing performance.

Use Entity Culling

If you added Entity Culling as an extra mod (or if Feather's built-in version covers it), make sure it is active. It skips rendering entities that are behind walls. In crowded areas like Hypixel lobbies, this can add 20 to 40 FPS.

Pair Sodium with Lithium

Sodium handles rendering. Lithium handles game logic. Together they cover both sides of the performance equation. If you are running Feather's built-in equivalents, the same principle applies: enable both, not just one.

Allocate the right amount of RAM

In the launcher settings, set the RAM allocation to 2 to 4 GB. More than 4 GB is usually unnecessary and can cause garbage collection stuttering. Less than 2 GB will cause lag in modded setups. For vanilla PvP, 2 GB is fine.

Update your graphics drivers

Out-of-date GPU drivers are the most common cause of crashes and rendering bugs with Sodium-based mods. Check your GPU manufacturer's site (NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel) for the latest driver version.

How the free hosting works

Both Feather and Dawn let you run a Minecraft server directly from your computer without paying for a hosting service. The server runs on your machine, and the client routes traffic through a proxy network so your IP address is not exposed to other players. You share a generated address with your friends, and they connect through that.

What you need

A computer with at least 4 GB of spare RAM and a decent internet connection (upload speed matters more than download). The server runs alongside your game, so if you are also playing on the same machine, you will want 8 GB of total RAM or more.

Limitations

This is peer-to-peer hosting, not a dedicated server. If you close the game or shut down your computer, the server goes offline. It is good for playing with a few friends, not for running a public server with 50 players. For that, you would want a proper hosting service.

Setting it up in Dawn

In the Dawn launcher, there is a "Host Server" option. Click it, pick your Minecraft version and world, and start the server. The launcher gives you an address to share. Your friends type that address into their multiplayer screen and connect.

When to pick Feather

Feather makes sense if you want a middle ground. You get 40+ mods out of the box (more than Lunar, comparable to Badlion), but you can also add your own. Badlion and Lunar use their own mod loaders, so you are limited to what they provide. With Feather, you can drop in any Fabric or Forge mod.

When to pick vanilla + mods

If you are comfortable installing Fabric Loader and managing mods yourself, vanilla plus Sodium, Lithium, Iris, and a few utility mods gives you the most control. It takes more setup, but you choose exactly what runs. Feather is the shortcut to a similar setup without the manual work.

When to pick Badlion or Lunar

Badlion has the largest built-in mod library and built-in anti-cheat for competitive play. Lunar is the cleanest client visually and has a strong PvP community. Neither lets you add external mods, which is the main trade-off.
